According to the Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, mine action operators cleared 3,555 hectares of agricultural land of explosive hazards in August under the state-funded Humanitarian Demining Programme. The Ministry published the results of humanitarian demining for August on September 3, 2026.
Mine action operators received UAH 251.2 million for the completed work. The average cost of clearing one hectare in August amounted to UAH 70,500. A total of 5 agricultural land demining agreements were completed during the month.
Work is currently underway under 42 contracts covering approximately 8,630 hectares of agricultural land. Another 105 contracts have already been completed, returning 19,966 hectares to productive use. The total cost of these works amounted to UAH 1.217 billion.
Key Developments in August
One of the major achievements was the completion of demining in Hrakove village, Kharkiv region. Funding for clearing the settlement was raised through the UNITED24 platform as part of the “Step by Step” initiative. The contract with the humanitarian demining operator “Humanitarian Security” was signed at the end of 2025, and the clearance operation lasted slightly more than six months.
The government also approved the creation of a “Donor Platform”, an information and communications system for managing funding projects in the mine action sector. The platform is intended to allow international partners to monitor project implementation and select requests for funding.
Another important area was the training of new mine action specialists. Twenty-five veterans and their family members from the Kharkiv region received diplomas in the specialty of “Humanitarian Demining Sapper.” The initiative was implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine together with the Ministry of Economy and Environment and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, with the support of the Government of Italy.
The Humanitarian Demining Programme is funded under the Ukraine Facility Plan, the European Union’s financial support instrument for Ukraine.
