In the de-occupied areas of Mykolaiv region, specialists from the international organization The HALO Trust are using the American “Scorpion” detector to locate explosive remnants of war. The device can detect metal objects underground and operate effectively even in areas with dense vegetation.

According to the head of HALO Ukraine’s demining teams, the system uses GPS navigation and a connection to a base station. The detector is calibrated to a specific level of metal sensitivity depending on the type of threat. It then scans the area and generates a map showing the locations of potentially hazardous objects.

Specialists note that the device can detect even minimal threats, including remnants of cluster munitions. Once the scanning process is complete, the collected data is transferred to a computer for further analysis.

The detector operator says the system makes it possible to work even in overgrown areas without first clearing the vegetation, significantly speeding up the demining process.

Mykolaiv region remains one of the most heavily mined regions of Ukraine. The use of modern technologies therefore improves both the efficiency of demining operations and the safety of sappers.
