The country formally remains part of the West, but is increasingly using its position as a bargaining tool — primarily on issues of sanctions, energy, and EU political decisions.

Bratislava has already demonstrated its willingness to put pressure on its partners by threatening to block sanctions and promoting its own interests. At the same time, its course remains unstable: the gap between its Euro-Atlantic commitments and domestic politics is growing, making the country’s position increasingly situational and unpredictable.

The author emphasizes that Slovakia has reached a point where its external commitments are increasingly diverging from its domestic politics, while any drift toward russia without changes to its energy dependence will only intensify.

For Ukraine, this means one thing: Slovakia is neither a stable pillar of support nor a full-fledged adversary. It is a variable factor that can either support common Western decisions or slow them down at a critical moment.

Slovakia today is not simply a neighbor in the EU and NATO, but a factor that can both strengthen regional security and create additional risks for Ukraine.
