Poland has put forward the idea of creating a new European military structure to strengthen the defense of the continent against the threat posed by russia.

The prospects for such a format and its potential significance for European security were discussed by international security expert and retired Major General Mykola Zentsev.

The proposed concept reflects growing recognition in Europe that the continent needs stronger independent defense capabilities and more effective mechanisms for responding to military threats.

Against the backdrop of russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, the deployment of Russian military infrastructure near NATO borders, and the broader deterioration of the European security environment, the idea of a new European military formation could become part of a wider discussion about the future architecture of European defense.

The initiative also raises a number of practical questions: how such a structure would interact with NATO, what countries could participate, who would command it, how it would be financed, and what military capabilities it would possess.

At the strategic level, however, the very emergence of such proposals demonstrates that European states are increasingly considering new formats for collective defense in response to the changing security environment.
